HISTORY
Artisans was founded in Mill Valley in 1977, as a non-profit educational arts organization. It is one of Northern California’s oldest and most innovative art organizations. Artisans Art Gallery moved to San Rafael in 2006, and was voted Pacific Sun’s Best Art Gallery in Marin for 2006 and 2007.

The Gallery closed its doors in the recession of 2008, and members now exhibit in numerous local venues and special exhibits. This creative adaptation has allowed the organization to thrive in the art-friendly community of Marin County.

Artisans carries the work of both emerging and internationally exhibited artists with a collection that includes oil, gouache, pastel, ink, charcoal, watercolor, photography, mixed media, sculpture and textile.

OBJECTIVES
Artisans is a place where many emerging talents first debut their work. Its primary objective is to aid artists in assuming a viable economic and integral role in the community and to broaden the appreciation of art and crafts in the community. Toward this end, Artisans strives to:

Enable artists to put their work before the public and by direct participation in Artisans, to benefit from experiencing public reaction to their own and other artists’ work.

Enable the community to discover art by providing opportunities to experience direct contact with working artists and to view a continuing presentation of artists’ work to enjoy, study and to own.

Provide educational experiences for participating artists and the community

Enable participating artists to benefit from the fellowship, critiques and experiences of other artists.

EDUCATION
Artisans educational component offers local emerging artists the opportunity to work with and learn from established artist members. They learn first-hand about presentation, development of biography and statement, show planning, fundraising and publicity.

Artisans also sponsors special artist events and offers classes and educational events to the public. In February 2010, Mardi Horowitz taught a Sumi class at Riley Street Art Supply (see www.RileyStreet.com for details), and in July 2010, Laura Culver taught a Hand-Colored Photography workshop at the Terra Linda Community Center (see www.LauraCulver.com for details).
